The Gift

Every year at Rhino Africa we run a Secret Santa at Christmas time. I've been given some pretty sweet gifts in the past, but this year's really stood out. My Secret Santa gifted me a "Mushroom Box" — specifically a box of Gourmet Chestnut Mushrooms, created by The Mushroom Box. You can find them on Instagram and Facebook.

What's in the Box?

It's a beautifully simple concept: a compact box filled with growing material and mushroom spores. The instructions are straightforward — make a slit in the package, add some moisture, pop it somewhere dark, and wait.

The Waiting Game

And wait I did. For about a week the box sat on a shelf looking entirely dormant. No signs of life whatsoever. I started to wonder if maybe I'd got a dud, or if I'd done something wrong with the slit or the moisture. Had I killed my mushrooms before they even had a chance?

The Surprise

Then one day I glanced up at the shelf and there they were — two dozen or so beautiful chestnut mushrooms, sprouting proudly from the box like they'd been growing for weeks. It was genuinely surprising how quickly they went from nothing to a full, lush cluster. Nature is wild.

The Payoff

There was only one thing to do with a harvest like that: cook them into a rich, delicious mushroom pasta sauce. And let me tell you — fresh-grown mushrooms hit different. The flavour was incredible.

Best Secret Santa gift I've received? Quite possibly. It's hard to beat something that gives you a little science experiment and a meal.
